Gateway Ladies Charity Night at the Barnyard
The Barnyard Theatre staged their hugely successful third annual Ladies’ Charity Night, in conjunction with Gateway Theatre of Shopping, on Thursday, 1 September.
The ladies were pampered by Gateway tenants Secrets Image & Beauty and Stuttafords on arrival, before receiving their packed Goodie Bag. Dave Guselli again brought his inimitable magic to the evening as the host, doing the lucky draw from over R50 000-worth of prizes from generous sponsors, and overseeing a few fun ladies’ night games at interval.
The ladies were also treated to the second show of The Final Countdown at the venue which took them on a wild ride through six decades of music, fashion and fun!
The Final Countdown was a party from start of finish, offering up a string of iconic hits starting in the 50’s and moving through into the new millennium. Songs featured from each decade included Let’s Twist Again and Blue Suede; Pretty Woman and Good Vibrations; Tragedy and Smoke On The Water; Dancing On The Ceiling and I Just Can’t Get Enough; I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt and End Of The Road; and finishing off with Lady Marmalade and the World Cup hit Waka Waka.
The ladies certainly painted the town red, and a portion of the ticket price of R150 per person will also be donated to Bobbi Bear charity organisation who assist child victims of sexual abuse.

Gateway to Fame's Rising Stars
The toughly contested second annual Gateway To Fame talent search competition reached a great climax with the final performance that took place at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway on Monday, 4 July.
The twenty singing finalists looked the part when they took to the stage courtesy of sponsor Gateway Theatre of Shopping tenants Stuttafords, who dressed them, and Scott & Wells, who did their hair. They performed one song each to backing tracks, while they were judged by a panel of experts consisting of local performers Evan Roberts, Marion Loudon, Melanie Roberts and Barnyard performer Adri Britz.
The junior (grades 1 to 6) winner was ten-year-old Kristina Burge from Chelsea Preparatory, who got a rousing response from the audience after performing Good Morning Baltimore from the hit musical Hairspray. In second place was Bernelee Frick (11) from Crawford La Lucia who sang Rolling In The Deep, followed by Crawford North Coast’s Kiara Teunissen (10) for her performance of Doo Bee Doo.
The senior (grades 7 to 12) category saw a landslide win for Danville Park Girls’ High, with their pupils scoring a hat-trick in the finals. The winner was 14-year-old Jarene Moses who wowed the judges and audience with her rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You. The runners-up in this category were Jessica James who performed Before He Cheats and Phumelele Mzimela who sang Without You. Danville also produced last year’s senior winner, Amanda Kunene, who hosted the evening and did a guest performance along with the 2010 junior winner Andrew Sutton, from Virginia Preparatory.
“The audience, judges and organisers were blown away by the enormous talent on show at Monday night’s Gateway To Fame finale. While the four judges scored them for their performance on the evening, a fifth of the final score was determined by the children’s participation and enthusiasm in the week of workshops held leading up to the event. Jarene and Kristina were both very worthy winners, and we are sure will earn their place back on The Barnyard stage in years to come,” said Debbie Davidson, owner of The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway.
There were big prizes up for grabs for the winners including a microphone (valued at R3000 and R4000) for each winner, as well as a keyboard (valued at R10 000) for the senior winner from Gateway Music. The two winners will also get the opportunity to showcase their immense talent again to a broader audience, when they make a cameo performance at The Barnyard Theatre in The Final Countdown backed by a live band on Wednesday, 5 October, with bookings open to the public. Jarene and Kristina will also get to perform two songs each in Gateway’s Palm Court on a Sunday still to be decided
Pre-show entertainment was provided by four Invited Performers and a team of dancers who also auditioned for their places and participated in the workshops.
The second annual Gateway To Fame competition was yet another huge success, with an overwhelming amount of entrants from schools throughout KwaZulu-Natal. The event was organized by local performer Shelley McLean whose expertise led to an unparalleled competition of this nature for children. Shelley was backed up by Liesl Coppin, Shelley Haggard and Calli Thomson who assisted with the workshops.
Other sponsors at Monday’s final included prizes from Gateway Theatre of Shopping tenants The Barnyard Theatre, Wavehouse, ScienCentre, Mr Funtubbles Fun Faire and Ster Kinekor.

Ikusasa School of Cooking & Samsung Store go Italian
With the winter chill in the air, Samsung and Ikusasa School of Cooking teamed up last Saturday at the Samsung Store in Gateway to cook up a heart warming feast for their hungry audience.
The Ikusasa School of Cooking (Ikusasa meaning "tomorrow" or "hope" in Zulu) is a charity that opened in January 2010 and offers 10 disadvantaged school leavers, on a yearly basis, the opportunity to learn valuable and in-depth culinary skills in a one year programme. The students who come from Children's homes or disadvantaged families in and around the Durban area, are following a City and Guilds based skills programme, which is fully administered by The International Hotel School (IHS). This programme not only provides the students with the necessary theory and practical experience to work in the hospitality industry, but also with the strong likelihood that they will be placed in jobs on completion of the course.
Students from the Ikusasa School of Cooking inspired the audience with a delicious Italian influenced lunch; comprising of Roast Tomato, Beetroot and Ciabatta Salad and the ever classic homemade Tagliatelle with Arrabiata.
When asked about her experience cooking for a live audience Princess Ngcobo, a student at the school said, “It was a great experience that gave us the platform to show off our skills and what we’ve learnt. Ikusasa School of Cooking has given me hope, not only for my family but also for my future”. Karen Henwood, the Lecturer at the school added that she takes so much pride in her students’ achievements, as their determination to succeed in life should inspire us all to give the less fortunate the chance to do the same.

'Orphans Unite' event at the Sports Arena Gateway, on 16th June 2011 – YOUTH DAY
PH Sports & Recreation, operators of the Sport Arena at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, conceptualized this event and in association with H For H organization, their NGO partner, hosted a hugely successful event for 3 Orphanages, Abalindi, St Thomas Children’s Home and Orphanaid on Youth Day. Peter Hooper and Rudy Tryon (PH Sports & Recreation) together with Christine Coleman (H for H) have been working on the concept for many months.
The orphans were put through a stimulating coaching session, headed up by Jeremy Parsons, who has a level 2 FIFA accreditation, and 6 coaches educated the orphans. Love Life were on hand to provide educational expertise on HIV/AIDS awareness. During the lunch break the Orphans were entertained by Drumkit doing Beatboxing (a form of music without instruments created form one’s own mouth) and Freestyler champion Philani Gumede, together they created a unique act of soccer tricks and human music, thrilling all! The event was concluded with a soccer session where the orphans applied the skills that they were taught earlier in the day. It’s obvious that there are some future Bafana Bafana stars out there.
It is PH Sports & Recreations objective to host such an event every month, with an annual mega event every Youth Day. If you want to get involved in this valuable project contact Peter on 083 604 0435.
‘This was a very satisfying experience for all concerned, but would never have materialized were it not for the generous donations from our sponsors. Supersport Let’s Play donated 60 soccer balls and T-shirts which the kids took home, Road Lodge Umhlanga Ridge provided lunch and drinks, Puma provided training balls and kit for the coaches, Gateway Music provided 60 recorders, 6 guitars and the PA system while Crawford North Coast took care of the transport. Gateway Theatre of Shopping management and Primelife for their important role in communication, marketing and support for the event, Nestle, Jockey, Electric Avenue , H for H Organization, PH Sport & Recreation, Unilever (Shield), Mr Price and Love Life all contributed immensely” said Peter Hooper (PH Sports & Rec) organizer and host.Comments:Richard Terry-Lloyd (Abalindi);
“how their sad eyes lit up when we entered Gateway...The Theatre of their Dreams...and for 6 hours their' home' brought warmth, happiness, and laughter. Thank you for all your efforts’
Rudy Tryon (PH Sports & Rec) organizer & host;
"our mission for the ‘Orphans Unite’ Youth Day is to highlight the power of soccer as an educational tool to raise the awareness of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, and to afford the Youth the opportunity to be educated, have fun and participate in sport".
Mrs Coleman (H for H / NGO partner);
"it is wonderful to see that there are experienced professionals who have the time and the ability to offer orphans these opportunities, it was a valuable event"
Stanton Munusamy (St Thomas Children’s Home);
"Great event! Special people doing extraordinary things. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching the kids faces light up with joy. It’s awesome to know that others care about our future leaders."
Maxwell (Orphanaid);
"brilliant event, meant a lot for them, 1st time experience, they all want to know when is the next one"
WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THESE KIDS LIVES, NOT ONLY IN THE SHORT TERM, THIS IS A LONG TERM PROJECT!!!

Local talent rocks Durban music scene
Held at Gateways MAX Institute of fashion on Saturday 12th March, The Blake Roberts Band set the venue alight with the sounds of their sizzling new album “21 Restless Grams".
MAX ignited a buzzing atmosphere with more than 350 guests travelling far and wide from in and around KZN to witness this awesome band launch their debut album (now available at Look & Listen stores countrywide). The venue was chic and friendly with a relaxed feel. The band put on a world class performance, opening with their sensational, unreleased music video for their single - Stockholm Syndrome. Concepted and filmed by Fuller Film Productions - this video shows how SA talent really can compete on an international level.
What makes the Blake Roberts band unique is the is the fact that they swing both sides of the pop rock scale encompassing melodic rock as well as jazz in their music, offering a rich and diverse tapestry of sounds. Backed up by strong dynamic vocals, the band offers a solid, well-crafted mix of sincere delicacy and strong passion. The lead singer Blake Roberts himself displays a sensual yet riveting voice on vocals while simultaneously on his acoustic Guitar. The other members of the band are Gerard DeBruyn on Bass, Greg Bedford and Dinay Naidu the session guitarists and Matt Bedford on the session drums.
Having made their first large crowd public appearance in 2010, the band has already enjoyed some success, making the final of the playoffs for the Mr Price Pro which subsequently lead to them playing at the Pro Beach Festival, Fifa Fan Park for the World Cup & opening for the legendary Guy Buttery.
Cindy Liu a local fan of the band who attended the launch on Saturday had the following to say, “I love the Blake Roberts band because they are different in that their music is eclectic, I also love that the band sounds awesome live not just when the CD is playing in my car and they were very interactive with audience"
Suzie Mockridge, Owner of MAX Institute of Fashion commented "This is by
far one of the best album launches we have hosted on all accounts - the music,
the crowd & the vibe!'
The band really had the crowd excited by adding to the hype and giving
away autographed copies of the album to audience members, while Secrets Spa &
Beauty offered free massages and the guests of the launch FREE treatment for the next day.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NOISE
Rough Diamonds & Divas, the brand new production currently being staged at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway, is a polished and sparkling tribute to music’s gravel-voiced icons.
What is of interest, is that the strength of this show lies in its exceptionally talented cast of ten, which includes three newcomers to the Gateway venue. Because of this, the vocals are adeptly handled in constantly changing variations which adds up to a wonderful musical journey showcasing a wide array of hits.
After the opening numbers America and Born In The USA, the inimitable Percy Smith gives a heartfelt rendition of the Louis Armstrong classics Hello Dolly and Mack The Knife, accompanied by new Barnyard talent Joseph Shumane on soprano saxophone. This is followed by what is undoubtedly the highlight of the show, Petro Liebenberg’s soulfully rousing rendition of the Edith Piaf timeless hits Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien and La Vie En Rose.
While most Barnyard shows are essentially a whirlwind of rock numbers delivered in a party manner, this production is slowed down with many of the hits showcased with passion and feeling. This is no better illustrated than with director Adrian Paulsen’s clever Beautiful medley combining hits from Joe Cocker, Christina Aguilera and James Blunt
There are, of course, plenty of hits which give the audience their anticipated dose of heart-pumping rock, and these include guitarist and vocalist Jason Guile (who has an impressive array of ten instruments on stage) get down and groovy in Kings of Leon’s Sex On Fire. Lee Paver shines in the Joe Cocker hits Unchain My Heart and You Can Leave Your Hat On before the first half closes with a medley of Neil Diamond hits completed with Sweet Caroline, led by maestro Johan Liebenberg, whose rendition is as close to the real man himself as you will ever get.
Rod Stewart’s version of Sailing sets the tone after interval, followed by the love duet medley consisting of We’ve Got Tonight, Up Where You Belong and Kiss. The tempo goes up a couple of notches as the opening night audience rocked along to Alice Cooper’s Poison, Cher’s Bang Bang and Bon Jovi’s You Give Love A Bad Name.
Lee Paver is joined by the other vocalists for the classic, With A Little Help From My Friends, before a rousing version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah leads the show into the finale party segment. What would a tribute to these the rough and raspy rockers, and the dark and dangerous divas be without Tina Turner? And Candice Skylark makes sure she is not forgotten with her rendition of Nut Bush City Limits as the show draws to a close.
With all the doom and gloom constantly bombarding us, this is a great way to escape for a few hours and realize that there is plenty for us to enjoy and celebrate.
Tickets for Rough Diamonds & Divas are R125 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials of R90 per person every Tuesday night and Sunday matinee show. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 – 566 3045 or e-mail gateway@barnyardtheatres.co.za.
